These terms

These terms are an agreement between you and Rhythm Kata (“we”, “us”), which runs this website (rhythmkata.com) and the practice app at app.rhythmkata.com (together, “the service”). By using the service, you agree to them. If you don’t agree, please don’t use it. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle your data.

The service

Rhythm Kata shows you rhythms in music notation, gives you a count-in, and grades how you tap them on a key, the space bar or the screen. It keeps your history, daily goals, streaks and progress. It runs in a web browser, and you can add it to your home screen like an app.

Who can use it

You must be at least 13 years old to use Rhythm Kata. If you live somewhere that requires a parent’s consent at your age, you need your parent’s or guardian’s permission, and they agree to these terms for you.

Guests and accounts

• As a guest, your practice is tied to your browser by a cookie. If you clear site data, use another browser or device, or log out, you won’t be able to open that guest’s history again. Some features, such as unlimited Adaptive practice and the progress page, need an account.
• With an account, you log in with your Google account, so use one that is yours and keep it secure. You’re responsible for what happens under your account. Tell us straight away if you think someone else has used it.
• One account per person, please, and don’t create accounts in bulk or by automated means.
• If you lose access to your Google account, email us from the account’s address (or tell us which one it was) and we’ll help.

Beta, price and changes

Rhythm Kata is in beta and free to use. While it’s in beta, we may add, change or remove features, reset or change how scores are worked out, limit usage, or pause the service, sometimes without notice.

We may introduce paid plans or paid features in future. If we do, we’ll tell you about the price and what it covers in advance, and you’ll only pay if you choose to. Anything that was free when you used it and becomes paid will be announced before the change takes effect.

Acceptable use

Please use Rhythm Kata to practise rhythm. Don’t:

• scrape, crawl or bulk-download the service, its rhythms or other users’ data, or use it to build a competing dataset or product;
• get around rate limits, guest limits or other restrictions, for example by creating many guests or accounts;
• try to access accounts or data that aren’t yours, or probe, scan or test the service’s security without our written permission;
• overload or disrupt the service, or send it automated traffic beyond ordinary use;
• reverse-engineer, decompile or tamper with the service in order to harm it, its users or us, or to get around these terms;
• use a display name that is unlawful, offensive or impersonates someone else;
• break any law while using the service.

If you find a security problem, please tell us at hello@rhythmkata.comrather than exploiting it.

Your practice data

The runs you play, your settings and your display name belong to you. So we can run the service, you give us permission to store, copy, process and display them to you, and to grade your runs again when the scoring improves. This permission ends when your data is deleted, apart from copies in backups until they expire. We handle this data as the Privacy Policy describes.

If you send us feedback or ideas, we may use them without owing you anything; we’re grateful for them.

Our content and the rhythms

The Rhythm Kata name and seal, the app and website, their code, design, ink artwork and text belong to us or our licensors. You may use the service for your own practice; you may not copy, sell or redistribute it or its content except as the law allows.

The rhythms in the library were extracted from PDMX, a public dataset of MuseScore scores (Long et al., 2024,zenodo.org/records/15571083), published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence. We took only the rhythms (the pattern of note lengths), not melodies or whole scores. Nothing in these terms limits what that licence allows you to do with the dataset itself.

No warranty

Rhythm Kata is a free beta, provided “as is” and “as available”. As far as the law allows, we make no promises that it will be available, uninterrupted, error-free or secure, that your data will never be lost, or that its grading is accurate. Timing on a phone or computer varies with the device, the browser and the audio hardware, so scores are a practice aid, not an assessment. Keep your own record of anything you can’t afford to lose.

Limitation of liability

As far as the law allows, we are not liable for any indirect or consequential loss, or for loss of data, profits or opportunity, arising from your use of the service or your inability to use it. Because the service is free, our total liability to you for anything else is limited to 50 euros (or the equivalent in your currency).

Nothing in these terms limits liability that can’t be limited by law, such as for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud, and nothing affects the rights you have as a consumer under the law where you live.

Ending your use

You can stop using Rhythm Kata at any time. To have your account and its data deleted, email hello@rhythmkata.com.

We may suspend or close an account, or block access, if you break these terms, if we must by law, or to protect the service or its users. Where it’s reasonable, we’ll tell you why first. We may also end the service altogether; if we do, we’ll give at least 30 days’ notice where we can, so you can ask for a copy of your data.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the service changes. The date at the top shows the latest version. If a change is significant, we’ll tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect. If you keep using the service after that, you accept the new terms; if you don’t accept them, you can stop using it and ask us to delete your data.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of the place where Rhythm Kata is based, and disputes go to its competent courts. If you’re a consumer living elsewhere, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws of your country and may bring a claim in its courts.

If any part of these terms can’t be enforced, the rest still applies. If we don’t enforce a term straight away, we can still enforce it later. You may not transfer your rights under these terms to anyone else; we may transfer ours if the service changes hands, as the Privacy Policy explains.
