Rhythm Kata

Practise rhythm until it’s effortless.

It’s hard to hear your own timing. Rhythm Kata helps you practise it.

Every note comes back marked. Reading is whether you played what’s written; Feel is how it sat on the beat.

You read every rhythm off the page, and your reading gets quicker with it.

See yourself getting better.

Rhythm Kata tracks about 490 fundamental rhythm units, like the dotted eighth and sixteenth, and learns how well you know each one. You see which are solid and which still trip you up, and how your clean tempo and first-sight reading change week to week.

Adaptive mode picks your next rhythm from that, bringing back the units you find hard until they stick.

An example: six weeks of practice.

Ten minutes, most days.

Choose how many minutes, clean runs and new rhythms you want a day. Each one fills a circle. Any day you practise gets a seal on the card, pressed a bit harder for each goal you hit.

Daruma · a traditional Japanese doll for setting goals

Fall down seven times, get up eight.

You get one each week. Traditionally you paint in one eye when you set a goal and the other when you reach it. Here your practice does the painting:

one eye
the first day that week you hit every goal
both
when you’ve done that on five days

Each week’s is drawn from scratch.

Do I need an instrument?
No. You tap on a key, the space bar or the screen.
Do I need to read music already?
No. It starts with quarter and eighth notes and gets harder as you do.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. It runs in the browser, and you can add it to your home screen like an app.
Does it listen through the microphone?
No, just tapping for now.
What’s a kata?
A set form in martial arts, repeated until you can do it without thinking. Same idea here, with rhythms.
What does it cost?
Nothing while it’s in beta. Without an account, Adaptive stops after 20 rhythms.
